DC's Go-Go Rhythms: A source of brain growth, education, and community healing

During this event, Dr. Jessica Phillips-Silver was joined by Dr. Natalie Hopkinson (a professor, expert on arts culture & criticism, and co-founder of the #DontMuteDC Movement) and Cam Poles (the Creative Director of Black Alley Band, an activist and expert on creative work and social justice) along with Black Alley go-go drummers. Together, they examined the role of go-go rhythms in children’s brain development, healing, and community building.

Rhythm...

Whether it be through music, movement, or other forms of expression - has been found to have a profound effect on the brain.

Research has shown that engaging in rhythmic activities can enhance cognitive function, improve memory, and promote emotional well-being. This is because rhythm activates various areas of the brain, including those involved in language processing, motor coordination, and emotional regulation.

When we teach children about the power of rhythm, we are not only helping them develop important cognitive skills, but also empowering them to tap into their own unique abilities.

By encouraging children to explore rhythm through music, dance, or even everyday activities like clapping or tapping, we are giving them a valuable tool for self-expression and self-discovery.

Rhythm can also serve as a bridge for connection between individuals.

When children engage in rhythmic activities together, such as playing music in a band or dancing in a group, they learn to synchronize their movements and communicate non-verbally. This fosters a sense of unity and cooperation, promoting social bonding and empathy.

By incorporating rhythm into our educational practices, we can help children understand the source of their individual power and foster connections with others.

Through the lens of brain science, we can appreciate the profound impact that rhythm has on cognitive function, emotional well-being, and social interaction.
